Why this exists
knownly was built for a specific kind of frustration. There are plenty of personality tools out there — DISC, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Big Five — and most of them stop at the mirror. They tell you who you are and leave you to figure out what to do about it.
That isn't enough for a Christian. If God made you with this temperament, then the question isn't just "what am I like?" but "what is God doing in someone like me?" The strengths he put in you are real. The shadow you carry is real. The biblical men and women whose lives look something like yours are real. There is a way of using a tool like DISC that points you back toward Christ rather than away from him, and that's what we set out to build.
knownly is for Christians who want to be known — by themselves, by the people they love, and most of all by God.
The framework: what DISC is, and what it isn't
DISC is a behavioural framework developed by William Marston in 1928. It describes four behavioural tendencies — Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness — that map roughly to how a person handles problems, people, pace, and procedure.
It is a useful framework, but we want to be honest about its limits.
- DISC has limited scientific validation. Compared to instruments like the Big Five (OCEAN), DISC is more popular in business and ministry contexts than it is in academic psychology. We use it because the four categories are memorable, practical, and produce a clear mirror — not because the framework is settled science.
- DISC describes behaviour, not identity. Your DISC profile is a snapshot of how you typically respond, not a verdict on who you are at the deepest level. People change. Christians especially.
- DISC is not affiliated with any commercial product. knownly is independent. We do not use, license, or imitate any proprietary DISC instrument. Our questions are written from scratch.
If you want a more clinically validated assessment, look up the Big Five. If you want a tool that takes the broad strokes of DISC and reads them through a Christian lens, this is what we have built.
The theological stance
A few things matter to us, and we want to be plain about them up front.
Biblical figures are illustrations, not theological types. The men and women we match you to — Paul, Nehemiah, Peter, David, Abraham, Ruth, Daniel, Luke — were real, complex people whose lives carry patterns we can learn from. The match is meant to draw your attention to one life in scripture. We are not claiming that Paul is "the D apostle" or that Ruth is "the S Moabite." Scripture is too rich and these figures are too whole to be reduced to a letter.
Jesus is the balanced ideal. Every type has strengths and shadows. Jesus had no shadow. He confronted with the courage of a D, connected with the warmth of an I, stayed with the steadiness of an S, and held the standards of a C — all without sin, all in full proportion. When you read about your type, the goal is not to stay where you are. The goal is to be conformed to the image of Christ, in whom your particular gifts find their fullness and your particular shadows are healed.
Denominational scope. knownly is written for the historic Christian church across mainstream traditions — evangelical, Catholic, Orthodox, Reformed, Pentecostal, Anglican, and non-denominational. We use the World English Bible by default (public domain). We do not take sides on contested questions inside the church that are not directly about DISC or personality.
What this tool will not do. It will not replace pastoral counsel, therapy, or scripture. It will not diagnose mental health conditions. It will not predict your future, calling, or spouse. It will not claim more for itself than DISC can carry.
Who built this
knownly is a small, independent project. The product, code, and content were drafted by a single operator with help from Claude (an AI assistant by Anthropic) and reviewed by a theological reviewer before publication. We are not a church, not a denomination, and not a commercial DISC vendor.
